Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program Recognizes Students’ Achievements In and Out of the Classroom

Comcast announced today it has awarded $238,000 in scholarships to 226 Florida students as part of its annual Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program.

The program, funded by the Comcast Foundation, is a one-time, $1,000 scholarship awarded to the best and brightest high school seniors for their community service, academic performance and leadership skills.

Three Florida students were selected to receive $5,000 Comcast Founders Scholarships – instituted in honor of the late Ralph J. Roberts, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Comcast Corporation:

• Mikayla Burch of Jacksonville, Duval County Public Schools – Jean Ribault High School
• Joseph Donato of Parkland, Broward County Public Schools – Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School
• Eriasia Frierson of Tallahassee, Leon County Public Schools – James S. Rickards High School

“Our Leaders and Achievers Scholarship winners across Florida are exceptional students who are committed to academic excellence and community service,” said Derek Cooper, Vice President of Government Affairs and Community Investment for the Comcast Florida Region. “We are honored to recognize their achievements and excited to support them as they continue their educational journeys.”
Across the state, Comcast has collaborated with local school boards and elected officials to recognize these students and their great achievements, including a special recognition ceremony for Leon County recipients at a school board meeting.

Among the Florida scholarship recipients are 39 students from the state’s largest school district, Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

“Comcast has demonstrated its commitment to our children by investing in their future and setting them on a path to college and career success,” said Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools Alberto M. Carvalho. “The Miami-Dade County Public Schools family is extremely proud of these dedicated and deserving students whose accomplishments merit recognition through the Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship program.”

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program provides scholarships to students who strive to achieve their full potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students. Since 2001, more than $28 million has been awarded to nearly 27,000 high school seniors across the country as part of the Leaders and Achievers Program. The philosophy behind the program is to give young people every opportunity to prepare for the future and to engage them in their communities. The program also demonstrates the importance of civic involvement, and the value placed on civic involvement by the business community.
