Kyiv Shooting Death Toll Reaches Seven as Mayor Reports Latest Victim

Details and Aftermath of the Kyiv District Shooting

    Incident Overview

April 20 (Reuters) - A man hit in a Kyiv district shooting on Saturday has died in hospital, bringing the toll of those killed in the incident to seven, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Monday.

A Russian-born man opened fire on passers-by with an automatic rifle on Saturday before barricading himself in a supermarket with hostages, where he was shot dead by police.

    Victims and Hospitalization Status

"The victim was in extremely serious condition. The doctors fought for his life, but unfortunately they were unable to save him," Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging app.

He added that seven people including a child remain hospitalised after being wounded in the shooting, which occurred in the capital's leafy Holosiivskyi district. Four of those hospitalised are in intensive care.

    Investigation and Security Concerns

Such shooting incidents are extremely rare in Ukraine and the country's security service said it was being investigated as a terrorist act. Police have not yet identified a motive for the shooting.

Public Response and Gun Control Questions

The shooting has raised questions both about the public's right to self-defence and about how the gunman was able to obtain a firearms permit, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko has said.

    • •The attack—rare in Kyiv’s wartime environment—is being investigated as a potential terrorist act; public debate has intensified over self‑defence rights and how the gunman obtained his firearms permit.
    • •Fourteen people were wounded, including a 12‑year‑old and a 4‑month‑old infant; four remain in intensive care and eight are still hospitalised, underscoring the tragedy’s human toll and raising questions about security protocols.
