The UK has mandated that St. Lucian nationals must now obtain a visa to enter Britain as of March 5, 2026, citing a recent surge in asylum claims. This aligns with Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s effort to tighten immigration amid rising support for populist Reform UK.

CASTRIES, March 5 (Reuters) - Britain has introduced a visa requirement for citizens of the small Caribbean island nation of St. Lucia and the Central American country of Nicaragua, as its government looks to tighten rules amid pressure from the populist Reform UK party.
"Their visa-free entry has created a back-door into our country," Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said in a press conference on Thursday, without giving more details.

The UK cited a notable increase in asylum claims from St. Lucian nationals as the reason for the new visa requirements.
The UK visa requirement for St. Lucians became effective from Thursday, March 5.
The St. Lucian government confirmed the UK's visa policy in an official statement.
St. Lucia has a population of about 180,000.
According to the World Bank, St. Lucia had a net emigration of just 23 people last year.
