Estonia Clears Tesla FSD for Road Use After Gaining EU Approval
Estonia Approves Tesla FSD Following EU Recognition
Background on Estonia's Approval
May 29 (Reuters) - Estonia's transport authority said on Friday it had cleared Tesla's FSD driver-assistance system for use on its roads, after recognising a type approval first granted in the Netherlands.
Details of Tesla FSD and Driver Responsibility
Level 2 Driver Assistance System
• Tesla FSD is a level 2 driver assistance system, meaning the driver remains fully responsible at all times for safe driving and must be ready to take over immediately, the authority said.
Official Announcement by Tesla
• "FSD Supervised now approved in Estonia. Rollout will begin soon," Tesla wrote on X.
Testing and Approval Process
European Road Testing
• The transport authority said the system had been tested on European roads for a year and a half before winning approval in the Netherlands, which Estonia has now accepted.
History of Self-Driving Vehicles in Estonia
• It added that self-driving and remotely operated vehicles have operated in Estonia since 2017, and that allowing Tesla's FSD onto its roads was a logical next step.
Other EU Countries Approving Tesla FSD
Netherlands and Lithuania
• In addition to the Netherlands, Lithuania has also approved Tesla's driver assistance system.
