Trump Announces Start of 'Massive' Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration in Greenland

US Exploration and Strategic Agreements in Greenland

Announcement of Resource Exploration

Oct 14 (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that "massive" oil, gas and mineral exploration is getting ready to begin in Greenland.

Trump did not share details about the exploration plans in Greenland but said, "there are experts that are saying that the amount of easily available oil is far greater than that of almost any land, anywhere in the world."

Background on US-Greenland Relations

The United States, Denmark and Greenland last month signed an agreement, aimed at ending tensions after Trump's repeated threats to take control of the strategically located and mineral-rich island.

Strategic Military Importance

"Any future attack on the United States will have to come across Greenland, where our Defense will routinely knock down drones, missiles, or any other form of weapon not yet even conceived," Trump added in his post on Truth Social.

Details of the Recent Agreement

The deal signed between the US, Denmark and Greenland expands the US military's role in Greenland, paving the way for two new military bases and Trump's "Golden Dome" missile defence system, while reaffirming Danish sovereignty and Greenlanders' right to self-determination.

Key Takeaways

  • Greenland sits atop substantial untapped hydrocarbon reserves—USGS estimates ~6 billion barrels of oil and ~70 trillion cubic feet of gas north of the Arctic Circle—though no production exists and exploration is technically and environmentally constrained
  • The September 22, 2026 trilateral agreement expands the US military footprint in Greenland, authorizing modernization of Pituffik Space Base, establishing two new defense areas (Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig), and paving the way for Trump’s proposed “Golden Dome” missile‑defense system
  • Mineral and mining interest in Greenland—including rare earths—has surged amid recent geopolitical moves, though extraction faces high costs, infrastructure challenges and environmental resistance
