Germany's Response to Ebola Case Involving US Citizen
BERLIN, May 19 (Reuters) - Germany is preparing to treat a U.S. citizen who contracted Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a health ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday.
Request for Assistance from US Authorities
"U.S. authorities have asked the German government for assistance in treating a U.S. citizen who has contracted Ebola in Congo," the spokesperson said.
Admission and Treatment Arrangements
"Arrangements are currently being made to admit and treat the patient in Germany," the spokesperson said, adding that there was a network of experts in the country for the management and care of patients with highly infectious diseases.
Involvement of German Institutions
Germany's foreign ministry, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases and Berlin's Charite hospital - which often deals with such cases - declined to comment on the case.
US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Statement
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Monday an American had tested positive for Ebola while working in DRC and was being moved to Germany for treatment.
