Catherine West Seeks to Trigger Leadership Contest to Replace UK PM Starmer
Efforts to Challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer
Catherine West's Statement on Leadership Transition
LONDON, May 11 (Reuters) - Former British junior minister Catherine West will push ahead with efforts to trigger a challenge to Prime Minister Keir Starmer in a leadership contest by asking Labour lawmakers to back the idea of setting out a timetable for him to stand down.
Reaction to Prime Minister's Speech
"I have listened to the Prime Minister's speech this morning. I welcome the renewed energy and ideas. However, I have reluctantly concluded that this morning’s speech was too little too late," West said in a statement.
Call for Orderly Transition and New Leadership
"What is best for the party and country now is for an orderly transition. I am hereby giving notice to No. 10 (Starmer's office) that I am collecting names of Labour MPs (members of parliament) to call on the prime minister to set a timetable for the election of a new leader in September."
West's Position on Candidacy
West will not declare her own candidacy.
