Europe's Electric Vehicle Market Share Surges Past 25% in July 2026

Electric Vehicle Registration Trends and Market Highlights

By Amir Orusov

Aug 24 (Reuters) - Battery electric vehicle registrations in Europe continued to rise in July, with electric cars accounting for more than one in four new vehicles sold as strong growth in France and Germany offset weaker demand in some other markets.

European BEV Market Growth

Battery electric vehicle, or BEV, registrations across 16 key European markets rose 13.6% year-on-year to 224,266 vehicles in July, giving fully electric cars a 25.7% market share, data from E-Mobility Europe, New Automotive and Fier Automotive showed.

Nearly 1.5 million BEVs have been registered across Europe so far this year, up 30% from the same period in 2025, highlighting continued momentum in the region's transition to electric mobility.

Country-Specific Market Shares

  • France: Hit a 35% BEV market share in July with 44,378 registrations.
  • Germany: Share rose to 29.3% with 78,609 registrations.
Nordic and Benelux Market Leaders

Nordic and Benelux markets remained Europe's most electrified, led by Denmark at 80.1%, followed by Finland (52.6%), the Netherlands (47.3%), Belgium (42.8%) and Sweden (42.6%).

Lagging Markets and Policy Impacts

Italy's BEV share fell to 5.9% from 10.1% in June after previous incentives expired, while Poland and the Czech Republic remained among Europe's least electrified markets at 4% and 7.5%, respectively.

Industry Perspective

"Electric cars remain one of Europe's biggest success stories in 2026, and governments must deliver stable, predictable policies to stay part of that growth," said Chris Heron, secretary general of E-Mobility Europe.
