Denmark Picks SAMP/T NG Over Patriot for Advanced Air Defence System

Denmark's Selection of SAMP/T NG Air Defence System

Thales and Eurosam Secure Danish Contract

April 21 (Reuters) - French defence and technology firm Thales said on Tuesday it will supply Denmark with its SAMP/T NG air defence system through Eurosam, its joint venture with MBDA, with deliveries scheduled from 2028.

Capabilities of the SAMP/T NG System

The SAMP/T NG is Europe's most advanced medium-to-long-range ground-based air defence system, capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and aircraft, and is seen as an alternative to the U.S.-made Patriot.

Countries Operating SAMP/T NG and Patriot

Denmark becomes the third country after France and Italy to be equipped with the system, while seven EU countries currently operate the Patriot.

    Strategic Implications for European Defence

    Reducing Reliance on U.S. Suppliers

The deal comes as Europe races to reduce reliance on U.S. suppliers and bolster homegrown capabilities, with the European Commission's ReArm Europe plan targeting up to 800 billion euros ($941 billion) in additional defence spending by 2030.
