Anthropic's European Expansion and AI Industry Developments
Anthropic Opens Milan Office Amid Growing AI Demand
ROME, May 21 (Reuters) - U.S. AI startup Anthropic will open an office in Milan this month, expanding further into Europe after opening offices in Paris and Munich late last year on growing demand for generative AI tools.
Company Background and Workforce Growth
Founders and International Presence
Anthropic, co-founded in 2021 by siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, is planning to triple its international workforce to meet a rise in demand for its Claude AI large language models outside the United States. Its European bases include Dublin and Zurich plus a London office employing about 200 staff.
Strategic Expansion in Europe
"After France and Germany, Italy is a natural next step,” Chris Ciauri, Anthropic’s managing director of international, said in an interview published by Italy’s Il Corriere della Sera.
AI Adoption and Regulatory Considerations
European Race to Deploy AI
The expansion comes as companies across Europe race to deploy AI systems to boost productivity while policymakers debate how to regulate the fast-moving technology.
Calls for Proactive Regulation
Daniela Amodei said governments should act early to avoid repeating mistakes made with social media platforms, where safeguards lagged widespread adoption.
Anthropic's Ethical Stance and Policy Challenges
Guardrails on Military and Surveillance Use
Anthropic has clashed with the Trump administration, notably by insisting on guardrails restricting how its models can be used for military purposes such as targeting weapons autonomously or domestic surveillance.
