JR’s 'La Caverne du Pont Neuf' Installation Opening Delayed in Paris

Postponement of the Installation Opening

Incident Leading to the Delay

PARIS, June 2 (Reuters) - The opening of the temporary installation by French artist JR "La Caverne du Pont Neuf" in Paris has been postponed after the giant cave inflated around the capital's oldest bridge experienced damage, organisers said in a statement.

The installation was due to open to the public on June 6 for three weeks. Several French media reported the incident was due to strong winds.

Ongoing Assessment and Communication

"The project's technical experts are currently working to establish the exact circumstances that led to the incident. As soon as the assessment has been completed, we will communicate its findings," the statement said.

"In the meantime, the decision has been made to postpone the opening of the installation. A new opening date will be determined in light of the conclusions of the ongoing assessment," it added.

About the Installation

Design and Visual Impact

The inflatable printed canvas structure creates a trompe-l'œil effect with a rocky appearance by blending white, black, and various shades of gray. It has been drawing tourists and curious onlookers to the banks of the Seine during its installation.

Artist Background and Tribute

JR’s Artistic Journey

JR, who began his career as a street graffiti artist in Paris, created the work as a tribute to the duo Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who wrapped the Pont Neuf in fabric in 1985.

Key Takeaways

  • JR’s grand-scale installation "La Caverne du Pont Neuf"—a massive inflatable cave enveloping the Pont Neuf—was set to open June 6 and run through June 28, drawing on trompe‑l’œil effects and immersive sound, augmented‑reality and olfactory elements from collaborators like Thomas Bangalter. • The structure—120 m long, up to 18 m high, covering the bridge without attaching to it (using air‑filled arches, printed fabric, and no permanent fixtures)—is the result of months of engineering, production by Air Toiles Concept in Brittany, and testing in an Orly hangar. (paris.fr)
  • The opening was postponed after damage struck the inflatable installation, reportedly amid strong winds. Organisers say technical teams are actively investigating the cause and will confirm a new opening date once assessments are complete. (paris.fr)
