Ocean Nutrition Canada Limited (ONC), the world’s largest Omega-3 EPA/DHA solutions provider, has a pioneering approach to wellness through innovation. Headquartered in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, ONC has created the leading Research & Development platform in the industry and operates the largest privately-owned marine research and development facility in North America.
ONC provides its customers in the dietary supplement, food ingredient and pharmaceutical sectors with a competitive advantage in the rapidly growing Omega-3 EPA/DHA market through their MEG-3® branded line of products created with ONC’s proprietary technology. With an uncompromising commitment to quality, MEG-3® products meet or exceed global quality standards.
Ocean Nutrition Canada (ONC) sees big growth potential in the UK Omega-3 market, says President & CEO Martin Jamieson. Jamieson says that while the typical UK diet is focused on healthy, whole foods, Brits still aren’t getting the recommended daily intake of 250 mg of Omega-3 EPA/DHA per day. Today, the average Briton consumes only 100 mg of Omega-3 per day, which is substantially low compared to some of its European neighbours. UK native Jamieson says he expects that increasingly health-savvy Brits will be jumping on the global Omega-3 wave.
“Fish is the best source of Omega-3 EPA/DHA, but not everyone can or wants to eat fresh fish regularly,” says Jamieson. “Dietary supplements are a great way to increase intake of these essential fatty acids, and with advances in technology, Omega-3 fortified foods offer another alternative. Adding Omega-3 to popular food items, such as breads and dairy products, make it easy and convenient for consumers to add more Omega-3 to their diet.” ONC’s MEG-3 ® powder, emulsion and food grade oil can be added to food products without affecting taste or odour thanks to the company’s patented technologies.
Increasingly, Omega-3 EPA/DHA concentrates are being developed as targeted health therapies for circulatory, heart, brain and mental health conditions. A recent European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) report supported a daily intake of 250 mg EPA/DHA based on their belief that Omega-3 EPA/DHA provided heart health benefits for Europeans.
“Omega-3 is one of the most researched ingredients in the world,” says Jamieson. “As consumers become more aware of its health benefits, innovative companies are looking for ways to respond to the demand for Omega-3.”
According to Packaged Facts (2009), Omega-3 enriched foods and beverages have entered an explosive growth phase in the global retail market, which forecasts Omega-3 sales to be worth about $8.2 billion by 2012. In the UK, Birds Eye, Flora and Marks and Spencer responded to consumer demands with the addition of MEG-3® to its products. Allied Bakeries recently reported a sales increase of 37% since the addition of MEG-3® to Kingsmill 50/50 bread.
ONC’s MEG-3® ingredients now represent over 100 billion servings of food and supplement products worldwide. With sales of food products containing Omega-3 more than doubling in recent years, the Omega-3 wave is rapidly gaining momentum in the UK and Ocean Nutrition Canada is at the forefront.
