Succeeds outgoing Chair James Shea following years of record-setting revenue growth and expansion

Venable LLP announced today that Stuart P. Ingis will succeed James L. Shea as the firm’s Chair.  Mr. Ingis will serve as Chair-Elect until February 1, 2017, when he will become Chair and Mr. Shea will serve as Chair Emeritus.

“This new role is a natural fit for Stu who has developed a DC-based, international practice, representing major global corporations and associations,” said Mr. Shea.  “He has been an excellent firm leader and partner.  His vision and foresight have enabled him, along with others on his team, to build a cutting-edge practice in data privacy and security, advertising and marketing law and policy.  Stu balances leadership and experience with fresh insights and energy, and I am confident we will continue our long history of success.”

Added Mr. Ingis, “Jim’s steady and consistent leadership has been the foundation of Venable’s success, and I’m greatly honored to succeed my friend and partner in this role.  I look forward to the opportunities ahead, and building on the traditions that have made Venable great throughout its history.”

Since joining Venable in 2006, Mr. Ingis has co-led the firm’s Privacy and Data Security Practice to national prominence.  He has also served as the Partner-in-Charge of the firm’s Washington, DC, office.  Mr. Ingis represents companies in the media, communications, information services, advertising, and retail industries before Congress, the Federal Trade Commission, and other federal and state agencies.  He has represented clients in testimony before congressional committees and in congressional investigations.  Mr. Ingis serves as counsel to, among others, the Direct Marketing Association, Interactive Advertising Bureau, and the Digital Advertising Alliance.  Mr. Ingis will continue to have an active practice in his new role.

A member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, Mr. Shea succeeded former U.S. Attorney General Benjamin R. Civiletti as Venable’s Managing Partner in 1995 and Chair in 2006. During Mr. Shea’s tenure, Venable has grown steadily, expanding from its Washington, DC, and Baltimore origins to New York and the West Coast, with offices in Los Angeles and San Francisco. The firm has consistently achieved record growth in revenue and profits, outperforming the AmLaw 100 average.
