Northvolt's bankruptcy trustee secures financial guarantees for scaled-down operations, preserving jobs and potential sale opportunities.

Northvolt Bankruptcy Trustee Secures Scaled-Down Operations

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Northvolt's bankruptcy trustee said on Monday it had reached an agreement in principle with key stakeholders in the electric vehicle battery maker for financial guarantees allowing the company to maintain a scaled-down continuation of operations.

Northvolt filed for bankruptcy in Sweden on March 12, marking it one of the country's largest corporate failures and effectively ending Europe's best hope of developing a rival to challenge China.

The scaled-back operation within the framework of the bankruptcy will employ around 1,700 of the company's staff, Mikael Kubu at judicial reorganisation specialists Ackordscentralen said in a statement.

He said that some additional people would be employed in foreign subsidiaries, without specifying any details.

Northvolt had around 5,000 employees when it filed for bankruptcy.

"Despite major cutbacks, it is positive that the business can continue to some extent, which is probably crucial for being able to sell the business in whole or in part," Kubu said.

The agreement will be formalised in the coming days, he added.
