How to Find the IP Address on MAC

When a system is connected to a network, a specific address is assigned to the system for its identity. Those connections which use the Internet Protocol system, are assigned the IP Address. IP Address stands for Internet Protocol Address. It is a set of four group of digits separated by periods. Each group has a higher limit of up to 3 numbers. If you’re using a Mac which is connected to the internet, then an IP address will be to your system. If you’re connected to a network as well as the Internet, then your order will be assigned an Internal IP address and an External IP Address.

Let’s see how to find both IP Addresses from your mac.

The Internal IP (OS X 10.5 and Newer):

There are some few steps to find the IP Address of a system. On your, MacBook click on the Apple icon shown on the top left corner of the screen. A drop-down menu will prompt. From the drop-down menu locate system preferences and click on that. It’ll lead to the Settings window.

On this window, find the Network option. It should be in the third row. By clicking on the Network option, you’ll see the network you’re connected to and all other systems that are available. Click on the system you are connected to. The IP Address will be right below the connection status.

The Internal IP (OS X 10.4):

If you are using an older version of MacBook, You still can find the internal IP Address. Click on the Apple icon on the top left corner of the screen. From the drop-down menu, click on the system preferences.

After the opening of the new window, Scroll down to Internet & network section. From the given options, select Network and open it. You can find this section in the third row of the window.

On the window, there’ll be an option to show the available connections and the connections that you are connected to. Click on the drop-down menu and select the network you want to join.

If you are connected to a wired network, choose built-in ethernet. If you are related to a wireless connection, accept AirPort. On the bottom of the box, you can see a button showing “Configure…”. After clicking on the button, you can see a few tabs. Now click on the TCP/IP tab. The IP Address will be there.

The Internal IP (Using Terminal):

You can also find the IP Address of your system by using Terminal. First of all, open terminal on your MacBook. You can see the terminal in the utility section of your Application folder.

Next, you need to use the ifconfig command. But using the standard ifconfig command will result in a lot of unnecessary data which will create a lot of confusion, To avoid that use this command: “ifconfig | grep “inet ” | grep -v 127.0.0.1”. After the execution of the command, you can find the IP address next to the “inet” entry.

The External IP:

Now as we have discussed the steps to find the Internal IP Address, its time to go for the External IP. To see your External IP first open your router’s configuration page. You can access your Router through any of the Web Interface. For the specific address look into your router’s documentation. Open the router’s status. You can Find the External IP address of your system there which is a group of 4 sets of digits with digits per game.
