WORLD EXCLUSIVE FROM THE REAL-LIFE IRON MAN AT TEDXGLASGOW

WORLD EXCLUSIVE FROM THE REAL-LIFE IRON MAN AT TEDXGLASGOW

On Friday 2nd June 2017, TEDxGlasgow will host its fifth annual event, welcoming over 1700 people to the SEC Armadillo, including the inventor and entrepreneur who has been labelled “the real-life Iron Man” – Richard Browning.

Over the past couple of months, Browning has risen to fame, with international media attention in more than 100 countries. Combined with appearances at the global TED conference in Vancouver, Berlin’s recent CUBE Tech Fair and numerous live flights, his company Gravity and its Daedalus Mark 1 propulsion suit have been brought to the attention of more than 1 billion people. Now, he will join Glasgow’s major TEDx event to not only deliver a TEDx talk but also to showcase his incredible invention – a human propulsion suit.

Browning’s back story is one of defying logic and tapping into the collective power of different people to tackle key challenges. Through his work in Kenya and India, he has focused on uniting interested parties who can tackle issues for common good and lead the way for new innovations. So, it’s perhaps not surprising that TEDxGlasgow, an organisation focused on bringing together ideas and people to stimulate positive change, invited Browning to speak at their ‘Lead or Follow’ 2017 event.

During his talk, Browning will explore how a dream became reality in less than a year, through hard work, endurance and collaboration. It is a story that shines a light on the creative power of entrepreneurs when married with passionate businesses, taking a vision to a commercial, patent pending technology.

The exoskeleton suit was built last year at a cost of thousands of man hours and tens of thousands of pounds and is powered by six jet engines. Featuring a state of the art heads-up display, it is reportedly capable of travelling at speeds of hundreds of miles per hour.

Over the last couple of months, global media have captured Richard in flight, and videos of his exploits have gone viral, with more than 100m combined views. But, on Friday 2nd June, Project Gravity and Richard Browning will be bringing a world exclusive to TEDxGlasgow and The SSE Hydro.

In an event-exclusive, Gravity will attempt to stream and visualise the data that the suit generates, with analytics leader SASreading and showcasing live data to the audience from fifteen variables emanating from each engine via a central processor on the suit. This information is usually only visible to Browning through his DAQRI holographic heads-up display smart helmet.

These visualisations will display characteristics such as engine performance and optimisation in time-series graphs and other charts. Browning and his team are developing ways to predict engine failure and uncover improvements in design using data analytics. It will also be the biggest live audience for an indoor flight to date.

Gurjit Singh Lalli, Curator of TEDxGlasgow, said; “We’re massively excited to bring Richard to our TEDxGlasgow 2017 event. His invention is leading the way for human-powered flight and is an incredible example of the power created by the connectivity of entrepreneurs and businesses. Both his talk and the following demonstration at The SSE Hydro promise to be a spectacle and inspiration to our audience.”
