What the big switch-off means for your PSTN phone system?

By Damian Hanson, Co-Founder & Director of CircleLoop

In the rapidly evolving landscape of our modern world, technological advancements continue to reshape the very fabric of business operations and communication. One notable development on the horizon is BT’s plan to halt the sale of telephony products reliant on outdated copper wiring in all exchange areas by September 2023, with a complete switch-off scheduled by the end of 2025.

This strategic decision represents a significant departure from the long-standing reliance on the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) systems, which have served as the telephony backbone for numerous decades.

In light of this transformative shift, safeguarding your business from any adverse consequences requires decisive preparation. It becomes imperative to comprehend the implications of this change for small businesses, including the associated risks and opportunities. Taking proactive steps well in advance of the September 2023 deadline is the key to navigating this transition smoothly and seizing the benefits it may bring.

The reason behind The Big Switch Off

The Big Switch Off refers to the upcoming discontinuation of PSTN in the UK. It has been the traditional communication network since its introduction in 1875 and is now considered outdated by BT Openreach.

From phone lines to fax machines, alarm systems to door entry machines, any devices relying on copper PSTN wiring will cease to function and necessitate replacement with a digital network across every UK home and business. Consequently, telephone lines that do not utilise Internet Protocol (IP) for internet-based communication will no longer receive support from UK networks starting from 2025 onward.

Businesses will be faced with having to make important decisions in switching their phone systems to enable reliable communication with their customers. With multiple options available it is important to understand what solutions are out there and how they can benefit your business.

Unlocking the Advantages: Embracing VoIP for Your Business Transformation

According to a recent survey conducted by National Business Communications, 69.5% of UK businesses still rely on landlines within their organisations, despite the impending switch-off.

Incorporating cloud-based communications emerges as the optimal alternative, and deferring the transition until the eleventh hour is not recommended. By embracing cutting-edge systems like Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), businesses can secure their future, embracing modernisation tailored for the digital era.

There are many advantages of transitioning to VoIP that traditional telephones simply cannot offer:

    Enhanced Connectivity

By transitioning to VoIP, businesses unlock the potential for superior connectivity, harnessing the power of faster broadband. This heightened internet connection translates into improved team productivity and overall output, ultimately driving increased profitability. With a stable and reliable communication infrastructure, companies can ensure seamless interactions with customers, partners, and suppliers—an invaluable asset during times of uncertainty.

    Elevating Customer Relationships

Faster and more dependable communication paves the way for exceptional customer experiences. Clear and uninterrupted interactions enhance customer satisfaction, foster trust, and fortify relationships, leading to long-term loyalty and repeat business. Through VoIP, businesses can ensure strong connections with their valued customers, setting the stage for continued success.

    Embracing Remote Work

VoIP systems serve as an opportunity for remote working arrangements. This adaptability empowers businesses to embrace and support flexible work practices, enabling employees to remain connected and productive from any location. By promoting work-life balance and employee satisfaction, VoIP systems lay the foundation for a thriving and empowered workforce.

    Navigating the Cloud Communication Landscape

A survey commissioned by Spitfire Network Services Ltd revealed nearly three-quarters (72%) of UK SMBs still don’t consider the PSTN Switch Off a high business priority. Upgrading a business phone system is no longer just an option but a necessity in order to stay competitive and keep pace with the demands of a digital world.

It may be a daunting time for your business and you may be stuck considering multiple options. When considering the selection of an alternative phone system, there are several key factors to take into account:

    • Cost: Does the Cloud-based service offer comparable or improved costs compared to traditional systems?
    • Upgrade: Does the chosen system provide additional benefits and enhanced value for your organisation?
    • Training: Will the system facilitate the learning process for your staff, allowing them to adapt smoothly with minimal disruption?
    • Need: Does the Cloud-based solution meet the present and future requirements of your business?

By carefully evaluating these aspects, you can make an informed decision and successfully transition to a cloud-based communication system, ensuring the longevity and efficiency of your business in today’s digital landscape.

    The potential of Cloud-Based Communications

The imminent arrival of The Big Switch Off represents a pivotal moment for businesses to embrace digital transformation and safeguard their future by adopting adaptable solutions capable of accommodating future technological advancements.

By swiftly adapting to digital alternatives, businesses can future-proof their operations, ensuring seamless communication and efficiency. Embracing adaptable solutions will empower companies to stay ahead of the curve, responding effectively to emerging challenges and opportunities.
