A UK source says ratification of the Chagos deal is continuing, countering a minister’s claim of a pause. The pact would transfer sovereignty to Mauritius while preserving access to the Diego Garcia base amid talks with the US.
LONDON, Feb 25 (Reuters) - Britain has not paused the ratification process for a deal to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago - including an island with the strategically important U.S.-UK air base Diego Garcia - to Mauritius, a government source said on Wednesday.
Speaking earlier on Wednesday foreign office minister Hamish Falconer told lawmakers the process of ratifying the deal in the British parliament had been paused and that there were talks with the United States.

A UK government source says the ratification of the Chagos Islands deal is not paused, contradicting an earlier statement by a minister who said it was paused for talks with the United States.
Britain would cede sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius while maintaining the joint US‑UK military presence on Diego Garcia through a lease arrangement.
Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer told MPs the process was paused for discussions with the US, but a government source later said ratification remains underway.
