A Lufthansa flight bound for Riyadh was rerouted to Cairo on March 6, according to CEO Carsten Spohr, due to safety concerns. The diversion reflects heightened regional airspace risks amid ongoing Middle East hostilities.
FRANKFURT, March 6 (Reuters) - A Lufthansa flight to Riyadh was diverted to Cairo for safety reasons, the airline's CEO Carsten Spohr said on Friday.
The company said that the regular scheduled flight, which took off from Munich on Thursday evening as scheduled at 2045 GMT, was diverted to Cairo due to the temporary closure of the airspace above Riyadh.
Passengers were being rebooked onto alternative flights, Lufthansa said.
Following the reopening of the airspace, the aircraft will be positioned to Riyadh on Friday evening and will then fly back to Munich as a scheduled flight, with an expected landing time of 0600 GMT on Saturday, it said.
