A banking career is a good option for people from all kinds of backgrounds and disciplines. It’s also a great sector if you are open to learning and making career changes. But competition for banking jobs can be quite fierce, so you’ll need to make sure your resume is top notch. Read on to find out how to write a banking resume that gets results.

    Summary statement

Write a summary statement, or executive statement, to demonstrate to the bank that you know how to get results and make profits for your employer. In four to six sentences explain why your experiences and skills are relevant to the job you’re applying for. Demonstrate that you have a proven ability to foster customer relationships and create profitable situations for your bank. Be specific, include details, and avoid generic phrases like “attention to detail.”

    Your education

Your next section should give the hiring manager some information about your education. It’s not necessary to include your high school education, since you’ll be providing them with information about your college education. The exception to this is if you’re still finishing your college degree, in which case you can list your high school diploma. Include the name of the institution, your GPA, the degree you earned, and any awards or achievements from your post-secondary education. Don’t forget any relevant certifications you have accumulated, such as Certified Bank Auditor or Certified Retirement Services Professional. List the name of the certification, the organization you received it from, and the year you were first awarded it.

     Work experience

Your experience section is all about showing that you are capable of getting results. It’s  important to keep it as relevant as possible. This can be done two ways. You can either only list your banking sector jobs, or you can list all jobs, but in describing them, only discuss elements that are relevant to banking. Whenever possible, discuss your experience in terms of accomplishments. Include the name of your past employer, the location, and the time period in which you were employed there. Use bullet points to describe your day to day activities, as well as some career highlights.

     Listing your skills

When writing your skills section, keep the language concise and effective. The hiring manager will be scanning your resume, and a good skills section is an excellent way to grab their attention and get them interested in reading about what you have to offer. Make it a combination of both your hard and soft skills, as both these categories are useful in the banking industry. Communication skills, analytical skills, the ability to work under pressure, and interpersonal skills such as teamwork are some good ones to include. Knowledge of investment products, competency with various computer platforms, and an ability to develop comprehensive loan checklists are some good hard skills to include.

    Conclusion

To get a job in the banking industry you will need an impressive and relevant resume. In some ways, the rules for writing a good banking resume are the same as for any resume. But there are some aspects that are quite specific to the sector, and its necessary to get those right. Banking can be an exciting and change-driven career, but you need a resume that demonstrates you have a proven capacity to create profits and foster customer relationships.
