European Commission Suspends Visa-Free Travel for Georgian Diplomatic Officials

EU Response to Georgian Visa-Free Regime Violations

    Commission Statement on Suspension

BRUSSELS, March 6 (Reuters) - The European Commission said on Friday it was suspending visa-free travel for holders of Georgian diplomatic, service and official passports in response to what it called a deliberate and persisting violation of the commitments taken under its visa-free regime.

    Requirements for Georgian Officials

"Representatives of Georgian authorities have to use their diplomatic or service passport when travelling to the EU for official and diplomatic purposes. Not doing so may result in the issuance of an entry ban," the Commission said in a statement.

    Background: Georgia's Political Shift

Once among the most democratic and pro-Western of the successor states to emerge from the Soviet Union, Georgia has turned increasingly authoritarian since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine and has deepened economic ties with neighbouring Russia.

(Reporting by Gianluca Lo Nostro; Editing by Makini Brice)

    Key Takeaways

    • •The suspension targets Georgian holders of diplomatic, service, and official passports, not ordinary passport holders, who retain visa‑free travel for short stays. (consilium.europa.eu)
    • •The suspension responds to Georgia’s enactment of controversial laws undermining democratic rights, a violent crackdown on protesters, and a unilateral halt to EU accession talks until 2028. (consilium.europa.eu)
    • •This measure is part of a broader EU strategy under a strengthened Visa Suspension Mechanism (effective December 30, 2025), allowing phased re‑imposition of visa requirements, initially targeting officials and potentially extending to the wider population if violations persist. (eeas.europa.eu)
