The Ethernet Alliance, a global consortium dedicated to the continued success and advancement of Ethernet technologies, today announced it had been recognized by the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) for its Power over Ethernet (PoE) Certification Program. The IEEE-SA Conformity Assessment Award was conferred on the Ethernet Alliance during the standards bodys annual awards ceremony on December 2, 2018. Also honored at the event was Ethernet Alliance Board of Directors member, David Chalupsky of Intel Corporation, who received the IEEE-SA Standards Medallion for his leadership in standards development enabling ever increasing and practical server access, including BASE-T and high speed electrical interfaces.
The IEEE-SA Conformity Assessment Award celebrates those making major contributions to the development and promotion of products conforming to IEEE standards. With the coming launch of the second generation (Gen2) of its industry leading PoE program, the achievement marks a timely milestone for the organization.
Realizing that PoE is one of those disruptive, game-changing technologies, the Ethernet Alliance launched its PoE Certification Program, ensuring users could continue to enjoy the opportunities and advantages that Ethernets unparalleled interoperability delivers. With the recent ratification of the IEEE 802.3bt„¢ standard “ the focus of our Gen2 program “ theres rising end user interest in applications needing higher power levels. Were seeing entirely new classes of PoE-enabled devices coming to market for applications like next-gen wireless access points, building automation systems, advanced lighting, and many more. The Ethernet Alliance Gen2 PoE Certification Program addresses these emerging innovations, and sets the stage for PoEs continued success.
Providing an easy means for identifying interoperable PoE products, the Ethernet Alliance PoE Certification Program includes a public registry of products certified to the organizations requirements. Building upon the success of the first generation of the Ethernet Alliance PoE Certification Program, Gen2 addresses the IEEE 802.3bt standard, which supports sourcing up to a maximum of 90 watts for higher-powered devices and equipment. It also incorporates an updated test plan, based on the IEEE 802.3bt standard, developed by members of the Gen2 Contributors Group of the Ethernet Alliance. The test plan is scheduled for validation during a University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) pilot test event in February 2019, at UNH-IOLs lab in Durham, N.H.

The forthcoming UNH-IOL pilot test event is open to the Ethernet Alliance members of the Gen2 Contributors Group, who participated in the development of the Gen2 Test Plan. Companies interested in participating in this event are encouraged to apply for Ethernet Alliance and the Gen2 Contributors Group membership no later than January 31, 2019, in order to secure recognition as a Gen2 Founding Member of the second-generation Ethernet Alliance PoE Certification Program.
