Romania found suspected drone fragments 5 km inside its territory following a Russian attack on Ukraine, highlighting security concerns.
BUCHAREST (Reuters) -Romania's defence ministry said on Tuesday that suspected drone fragments were found 5 km (3.2 miles) inside its territory following an overnight Russian attack on Ukrainian Danube river ports.
The EU and NATO member shares a 650-km land border with Ukraine and has had drones breach its airspace and fragments fall onto its territory repeatedly since Russia began attacking Kyiv's ports across the Danube from Romania.
Weather conditions did not allow Romania to scramble fighter jets overnight, and the population in the area was alerted to take cover, the ministry added.
The suspected fragments were found near Grindu in the southeastern county of Tulcea near the Danube, the ministry said.
Romania has received an advanced air defence system from the United States, which could enhance its ability to protect itself against drones entering its airspace, the defence ministry said last month.
