UK ministers are reportedly considering delaying key shipbuilding programmes—including the Type‑45 destroyer replacement—to achieve £10 billion in savings; the MoD refutes the report as “pure speculation,” affirming a defence investment plan is being finalized.
March 19 (Reuters) - UK ministers are planning to push back major shipbuilding programs and other projects to make 10 billion pounds ($13.43 billion) worth of savings in the defence ministry, The Times reported late on Thursday, citing sources.
A replacement program for the six "Type-45" destroyers, expected to be retired between 2035 and 2038, will be deferred by years to save billions under one option being examined, the report said.
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson called the report "pure speculation" and said it is working to finalise the "defence investment plan" which will be published "as soon as possible."
