Trump Strongly Weighs U.S. NATO Exit After Iran Conflict, Says Telegraph

Trump Considers U.S. Withdrawal from NATO Following Iran Dispute

    Background of the NATO Disagreement

LONDON, April 1 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said he was strongly considering pulling the United States out of NATO after allies failed to back U.S. military action against Iran, according to an interview with Britain's Daily Telegraph.

    Trump's Criticism of NATO

Trump described the alliance as a "paper tiger" and said removing the United States from the defence pact was now "beyond reconsideration," the newspaper reported. He said he had long held doubts about NATO's credibility.

    Trump's Statements on U.S. Membership

"Oh yes, I would say [it’s] beyond reconsideration," Trump told the newspaper when asked about whether he would reconsider U.S. membership of the alliance after the conflict.

"I was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way."

    Key Takeaways

    • •Trump’s frustration stems from NATO allies’ refusal to help secure the Strait of Hormuz amid the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran—he described the alliance as a “very foolish mistake” and “cowards,” asserting U.S. independence in the mission. (apnews.com)
    • •Legal constraints may complicate any unilateral NATO exit: a 2023 law requires congressional authorization to withdraw. Republican voices, like Rep. Don Bacon, warn such a move could spark internal GOP turmoil. (apnews.com)
    • •Trump’s remarks reflect a broader “America First” foreign policy posture, as the administration increasingly distances itself from multilateral alliances. Europe has resisted involvement, calling the Iran conflict “not our war.” (lemonde.fr)
