Starting 2021 on a high: why corporate events are crucial for company buy-in and cultural success

Throughout 2020, the coronavirus pandemic negatively impacted communication and team cohesion within organisations across the world, with workforces separated and having to become accustomed to connecting virtually using tools like Zoom and Microsoft Teams.

As we start the New Year, there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel, with the rollout of an effective vaccine giving us hope that we could reach a ‘new normal’ soon.

Many firms are keen to get 2021 off to the best possible start, but to do so, it will be crucial for them to reaffirm workplace culture and employee buy-in.

Organising a corporate event, either virtually or in person, is one of the best and simplest ways to improve your company culture, strengthen team cohesion, and align your employees’ principles and objectives with your own, and will be key to corporate success in 2021 – here’s why.

Company culture

For your employees, what makes your company a good place to work isn’t the products you sell or the services you offer – it’s the workplace culture you create.

Your staff form the backbone of your organisation so, if they don’t feel valued and appreciated, certain areas of your business will suffer, particularly employee attraction and retention. This is backed up by a recent study by Glassdoor, which found that 77% of adults would consider a company’s culture before applying for a job there.

Clearly, workplace culture is a priority for both existing and prospective employees and, if you do not do enough to prioritise it too, your business will only suffer. This is one reason why regular corporate events can have a hugely positive impact on a business.

Staff days out, virtual teambuilding events or company away days that encompass both a business update and fun activity, are a great way to let colleagues know how much you value their contributions to your business.

You could also consider working with an events organiser to plan a family fun day where you invite employees to bring their loved ones together. These types of events can help strengthen relationships within your workforce after such a prolonged period of limited interaction between employees and give them an opportunity to get to know colleagues through their families.

With that said, teambuilding is not just about strengthening existing working relationships – it is equally about developing cohesion and collaboration where they may previously have been lacking.

Just because staff members spend so much time together doesn’t necessarily mean they know each other well, or indeed that they even get along. Holding fun, team-based events that encourage people to work more effectively together can really help break down barriers and allow colleagues to understand each other better, providing a big boost to morale and workplace culture.

For employees, knowing their hard work is appreciated and they are surrounded by peers who they share a strong professional bond with is crucial for making them feel satisfied, which in turn can lead to increased staff commitment and overall business productivity.

Company buy-in

Corporate events also have an important role to play in encouraging employees to share your business goals and visions.

Though employees don’t necessarily have to agree with every decision you make, it can be difficult to motivate them if they are fundamentally at odds with the direction that you want to take the business in.

This is why employee buy-in is so important. By helping staff understand and feel a part of decision-making, you can make them feel more valued and, as a result, they are more likely to be productive when tasked with helping you to carry out your objectives.

Holding staff events that reflect your business’ core values can really improve your chances of achieving company buy-in by encouraging employees to see things from your perspective and to recognise that the decisions you have made or intend to make are justified.

Employees will likely appreciate the effort that you have gone to in helping them to understand the ethos and visions that you have for the company and will welcome the transparency.

As well as helping employees understand and buy into your business and strategy, corporate events can also be an effective method for organising staff training to get them on board with the new direction the firm is taking.

Conclusion

With some uncertainty still expected for months to come, having a strong company culture will be the glue that holds organisations together, and corporate events will be essential for business success.

Though what happened throughout the course of 2020 was completely out of our control, by utilising physical and virtual corporate events you can remotivate your employees, boost productivity, and make 2021 a year to remember for all the right reasons.
