Udmurtia’s governor reported damage and injuries after Ukrainian drones hit a site, prompting temporary flight suspensions in Izhevsk. Unofficial reports point to Votkinsk’s missile plant as the likely target.
Feb 21 (Reuters) - The governor of the remote southern Russian region of Udmurtia said early on Saturday that Ukrainian drones had damaged a site in his region.
"A site in Udmurtia has come under attack from drones. There has been damage and injured as a result," Alexander Brechalov said in a video posted on Telegram.
He gave no further details of the attack, but urged residents not to panic or spread unconfirmed information.
The airport in Udmurtia's main city, Izhevsk, and those in cities in nearby regions suspended operations, the civil aviation authority Rosaviatsiya said.
Unofficial Ukrainian military blogs said Ukrainian forces had attacked a plant manufacturing Russian missiles -- including the short-range Iskander missile and intercontinental Topol-M missiles, in Votkinsk, about 1400 km (800 miles) from Ukraine.
Sites posted pictures and video of what they said was the attack, including a large column of smoke floating skywards.
The unofficial Russian Telegram channel SHOT, which often quotes contacts in the security services, said residents of Votkinsk reported hearing at least three explosions and the humming of drones.
Russian military blogs also reported an attack that triggered a fire at a gas processing plant in the southeastern Russian city of Samara.
Officials in Samara region issued no report of such an attack.
