Germany’s federal government said on March 16, 2026, that a hostile takeover of Commerzbank by UniCredit would be unacceptable, reaffirming its support for Commerzbank’s independence and clarifying supervisory oversight lies with the ECB and the cartel office.
BERLIN, March 16 (Reuters) - A hostile takeover of Commerzbank by Italy's UniCredit would be unacceptable, said a German finance ministry spokesperson.
The German government is not a supervisory authority, said the spokesperson, pointing to the European Central Bank and Germany's cartel office as responsible independent bodies.
"However, the federal government's position is very clear: From our perspective, a hostile takeover would be unacceptable," said the spokesperson, adding that Commerzbank is "succeeding with its course of independence."
