VDMA urges the EU to secure access to critical magnets from China, crucial for European engineering sectors, amid efforts to reduce dependency on Chinese imports.
FRANKFURT (Reuters) -Germany's VDMA machinery and equipment manufacturers' lobby said on Monday it welcomed a push by the European Union to reduce the region's dependence on imports of critical raw materials from China, urging for a particular focus on permanent magnets.
In a statement, the association said the entire sector of European small and medium-sized industrial companies was dependent on access to raw materials.
"Permanent magnets are a particular focus for the mechanical and plant engineering sector," it added.

Permanent magnets are materials that maintain a persistent magnetic field without the need for an external power source. They are crucial in various applications, including electric motors and generators.
The VDMA, or the German Engineering Federation, represents the interests of machinery and equipment manufacturers in Germany. It advocates for policies that support the industry, including access to raw materials.
Critical raw materials are essential materials for the economy that have a high risk of supply disruption. They are vital for manufacturing and technology sectors, including permanent magnets.
