EU regulators are considering interim measures against Meta's AI features in WhatsApp due to complaints from small companies. The decision timeline remains unclear.
BRUSSELS, Dec 4 (Reuters) - EU regulators are considering whether to impose interim measures against Meta over its rollout of artificial intelligence features in its messaging service WhatsApp, EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera said on Thursday.
Ribera, who had earlier opened an investigation into the U.S. tech giant's policy which will go into effect in January, did not say when she would decide about interim measures.
She told reporters that the European Commission had received complaints from small companies about Meta's WhatsApp AI policy.

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines programmed to think and learn. It is used in various applications, including messaging services, to enhance user experience and automate tasks.
The European Commission is the executive branch of the European Union responsible for proposing legislation, implementing decisions, and managing the day-to-day operations of the EU. It plays a key role in regulating competition and market practices.
Interim measures are temporary actions taken by regulatory authorities to address urgent issues or prevent harm while a full investigation or decision is pending. They are often used in antitrust cases to maintain market competition.
