Postmedia Launches Ad Registry

Postmedia Network Inc. (Postmedia) today announced the creation of a digital ad registry that will be compliant with the Canada Elections Act (Act), and amendments brought under Bill C-76, the Elections Modernization Act including the new online platform requirements. Bill C-76 requires digital platforms accepting regulated political advertising to maintain and publish a digital ad registry of such advertising. Postmedias ad registry will be in effect as of June 30, 2019 as required under the legislation.

At Postmedia, we have developed a Canadian solution to create a Bill C-76 compliant ecosystem, said Josh Merchant, Senior Vice President & Chief Technology Officer, Postmedia. Postmedias ad registry will allow the public to see an electronic copy of every election ad run on our digital platforms along with the name of the person who authorized the ad.

The omnibus bill, which was passed on December 13, 2018, made several changes to the Canada Elections Act. Among them is the requirement that online platforms create a registry of all digital advertisements placed by political parties, candidates or other regulated political entities and third parties during the pre-writ and writ periods and to ensure they remain visible to the public for two years and be maintained an additional five years following that.
