Brazil’s lower house approved the EU-Mercosur trade deal on Feb 25, 2026, sending it to the Senate. Final ratification by Mercosur members is still needed before the pact can take effect.
SAO PAULO, Feb 25 (Reuters) - Brazil's lower house on Wednesday approved the recently signed free trade agreement between the European Union and the South American bloc Mercosur, pending a green light from the Senate to ensure the country's full endorsement of the deal.
The approval by the legislatures of Mercosur's members - Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay - is a necessary step for the trade accord to take effect after 25 years of negotiations.

Brazil’s lower house approved the EU-Mercosur trade agreement, advancing the pact to the Senate. It marks progress toward implementing a long-negotiated free trade deal.
The Senate will review and vote on the agreement. If approved, Brazil’s endorsement moves forward, but the pact still needs ratification across all Mercosur members.
Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay must ratify the agreement through their legislatures before it can take effect.
