The EU is ready to counter US tariffs, according to French spokeswoman Sophie Primas, following Trump's 25% tariff announcement on EU imports.
PARIS (Reuters) - A trade war is in no-one's interest but the European Union will respond after U.S. President Donald Trump said his administration would soon announce a 25% tariff on imports from the EU, said French government spokeswoman Sophie Primas.
"If we must respond, we will respond," Primas told BFM TV on Thursday.
She added "the European Union has not been created to bother the United States," responding to Trump's comments on Wednesday the EU was formed "in order to screw the United States".
The European Commission said on Wednesday it will react "firmly and immediately against unjustified barriers to free and fair trade" after Trump said his administration would soon announce a 25% tariff on imports from the EU.

The French government spokeswoman stated that if the EU must respond to US tariffs, it will do so. She emphasized that the EU was not created to antagonize the United States.
The European Commission announced it would react 'firmly and immediately' against what it considers unjustified barriers to free and fair trade.
President Trump commented that the EU was formed 'in order to screw the United States,' prompting a response from EU officials.
