Germany's conservatives won the election, positioning Friedrich Merz as the next chancellor, while the SPD faced a historic defeat.
BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's opposition conservatives won the national election on Sunday, putting leader Friedrich Merz on track to be the next chancellor while the far-right Alternative for Germany came in second, its best ever result, exit polls showed.

Friedrich Merz is on track to become the next chancellor following the election.
CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann stated that the traffic light coalition has finally been voted out and confirmed that the new chancellor will be Friedrich Merz.
SPD General Secretary Matthias Miersch described the results as a historic defeat for the SPD, calling it a very bitter evening.
CSU Chairman Alexander Dobrindt expressed skepticism about forming a coalition with the Greens, stating he believes there will be no change in their policy.
