Tens of Millions of Americans Lack Protected Lifetime Income for Retirement; New Research Reveals Looming Retirement Income Crisis

gbafNews28
  • Inaugural Protected Lifetime Income Index from Alliance for Lifetime Income highlights urgent need for Americans to secure reliable lifetime income for retirement.
  • Alliance kicks off Protect Your Retirement Income Day with virtual reality risk roadshow.
  • Launches Research Fellows, group of leading experts to raise awareness of protected lifetime income among consumers and financial advisors.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 04, 2018 — Two-thirds of today’s pre-retirees haven’t taken the critical step of calculating their expected retirement expenses, while half of retirees admit they have not determined their expenses before they retired, according to new research from the Alliance for Lifetime Income. The Alliance is a nonprofit 501(c)(6) organization formed and supported by some of the nation’s leading financial services organizations to create awareness and educate Americans about the importance of protected lifetime income. This knowledge gap puts retirement at risk for tens of millions of Americans and highlights the need for consumers and their financial advisors to consider a new category of retirement planning: protected retirement income, lifetime income they can’t outlive.

Overall, only 38 percent of households have protected lifetime income in the form of an annuity or pension, leaving approximately 63 million households without protection, according to Alliance for Lifetime Income research.

These and other findings from the Alliance for Lifetime Income’s new Protected Lifetime Income Index illustrate the retirement crisis facing Americans who have focused primarily on accumulating retirement assets, without also considering the need for retirement income. The Index is a first-of-its-kind ongoing research initiative designed to track how effectively American households are planning for retirement income and shine a spotlight on the larger societal impact of the income-planning gap.

Moreover, Americans with protected lifetime income are far more confident their retirement savings and income will last the rest of their lives: 74 percent feel this way versus only 33 percent of those without an annuity or pension, according to the research. For many pre-retirees, protected lifetime income is critical for filling the financial gap between retirement needs and income from savings/investments and Social Security.

The launch of the Index coincides with Protect Your Retirement Income Day, the Alliance for Lifetime Income’s flagship event designed to drive nationwide awareness and education, as well as to amplify the national conversation around protected lifetime income and the role that annuities can play in today’s modern retirement plan.

“We’re facing the first generations of American workers approaching retirement with no clear idea of how much money they can count on receiving or what they can safely spend from their savings such as IRAs and 401(k) accounts, without running out of money,” said Dr. Michael Finke, Alliance for Lifetime Income Research Fellow and Dean and Chief Academic Officer of The American College of Financial Services. “Protect Your Retirement Income Day is a reminder that Americans should always consider how to acquire lifetime income for retirement that can give them the confidence to maintain the retirement lifestyle they want.”

Finke added: “Americans are living longer and face a variety of risks in retirement. Today, most retirees rely on withdrawals from their defined contribution savings to pay for expenses in retirement. If they had an annuity to accompany their savings and investments, they could always count on a source of guaranteed monthly income, which would reduce the risk of running out of money. And annuities are a solution that can provide that protected income for life.”

Finke is one of eight new Alliance for Lifetime Income Research Fellows. This group of independent experts and thought leaders from the academic and public policy worlds will serve as research partners to the Alliance on a variety of topics related to retirement security, longevity and protected lifetime income. The list of Fellows includes:

Jason J. Fichtner, Ph.D., is a senior lecturer and associate director of the Master of International Economics and Finance program at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

Michael Finke, Ph.D., is Dean and Chief Academic Officer of The American College of Financial Services.

William G. Gale, Ph.D., is the Arjay and Frances Miller Chair in Federal Economic Policy and a senior fellow in the Economic Studies Program at the Brookings Institution.

Gopi Shah Goda, Ph.D., is a senior fellow and the deputy director at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research at Stanford University. She is also a faculty research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Seth D. Harris served as the Acting Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Labor under President Barack Obama. As Acting Secretary, he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Social Security and Medicare trust funds. He currently is a Visiting Professor at the Cornell Institute for Public Affairs, and an attorney in Washington, DC.

Benjamin Harris, Ph.D., served as chief economist to Vice President Joe Biden and is currently the executive director of the Kellogg Public-Private Interface at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.

Wade Pfau, Ph.D., is a professor of retirement income in the Ph.D. program for Financial and Retirement Planning at The American College of Financial Services. He is also a principal at McLean Asset Management.

Colin Devine is the director of Advantage Insurance Inc., a San Juan-headquartered insurer, and senior advisor to Health Catalyst Capital

Many pre-retirees lack protected lifetime income

In addition to the retirement income knowledge gap, the Protected Lifetime Income Index also revealed several other important trends:

  • Overall, retirees are nearly twice as likely as non-retirees to have protected lifetime income — 58 percent of retirees versus 32 percent of those not retired.
  • The level of protected lifetime income (via a pension or an annuity) declines precipitously with age. More than half of Americans 55 and over have some form of protected lifetime income, compared with just one-quarter of 25- to 34-year-olds.
  • The two points above indicate that current retirees belong to the last generation benefiting from pensions, whereas 75 percent of younger Baby Boomers and later generations lack any source of protected lifetime income other than Social Security.
  • Retirees with protected lifetime income are less dependent on Social Security, which is estimated to replace only about 40 percent of pre-retirement earnings for the average worker.
    • Among retirees with at least $150,000 in assets, those with a source of protected income receive only about one-quarter of their retirement income from Social Security, while those without protected lifetime income need Social Security for about one-third of their income.
    • Among retirees with less than $150,000 in assets the difference is more stark: those with protected lifetime income receive an average of 40 percent of their income from Social Security, while for the larger non-protected segment, Social Security accounts for 80 percent of their income.

Protect Your Retirement Income Day kicks off this morning in Times Square, New York City where consumers, financial advisors and others will participate in various events, including a virtual reality experience that highlights the risks Americans face in their lives every day, and shows how they can retire that risk through protected lifetime income planning.

Consumers and financial advisors can find educational content and other resources about the new category of protected lifetime income at www.RetireYourRisk.org. Releviate Therapeutics Inks Exclusive License for Human Monoclonal Antibodies for Chronic Pain Indications

gbafNews28

Releviate„¢ Therapeutics, a bio-pharmaceutical company addressing the needs of patients suffering from chronic pain, signs an exclusive license for two patent pending human monoclonal antibodies developed by researchers at the University of California, Riverside and Duke University. Pre-clinical studies suggest the RLVT-9-01 (anti-MMP-9 antibody) and the RLVT-14-02 (anti-MMP-14 antibody) could directly target the specific matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) activating neuropathic pain pathways. Extensive recent studies implicate MMP-9, MMP-14 and MMP-2 as causes of chronic pain.

The University of California, Riverside is proud of its role in researching this scientific advancement, and we look forward to working with Releviate Therapeutics for its next phase of study and, potentially, patient care, says Brian Suh, director of technology commercialization at the University of California, Riverside.

50 Million Americans Need an Effective Chronic Pain Treatment

Chronic pain afflicts approximately 50 million adults (20%) in the U.S. each year, according to an analysis by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). According to BCC Research, the global market for pain management will grow from nearly $36.1 billion in 2017 to $52.0 billion by 2022. Until now, there hasnt been a major breakthrough treatment for moderate to severe neuropathic pain conditions since opioids were introduced in 1806, and these are not a sustainable solution for most people, especially in light of the worsening opioid crisis in the U.S. Alternative therapies in this field include repurposed anti-seizure and anti-depressant medications. However, these groups of medications have very limited efficacy in patients with neuropathic pain.

Releviate Therapeutics is using the exclusively licensed RLVT-9-01 and RLVT-14-02 molecules to address unmet needs in chronic pain. RLVT-9-01 targets MMP-9, which recent discoveries implicate as a switch that turns on acute neuropathic pain. RLVT-14-02 targets MMP-14, which has been implicated in triggering chronic neuropathic pain. Releviate Therapeutics will initially investigate the safety and efficacy of blocking each or both MMPs first for patients with small fiber neuropathy (SFN) and next for patients with diabetic neuropathy (DNP). The human antibody products are highly specific for MMP-9 and MMP-14, respectively, which reduces chances for severe adverse events.

Releviate Therapeutics is well positioned with the expertise and capabilities to deliver the worlds first new class of chronic pain treatment strategies in over 200 years, says Sergey Sikora, Releviate Therapeutics founder and bio-pharmaceutical industry veteran. This agreement enables us to immediately start the next phase of our pre-clinical and clinical development of this promising technology.

About Releviate Therapeutics

Founded in 2020, Releviate„¢ Therapeutics is a bio-pharmaceutical company addressing the needs of patients suffering from chronic pain. Our treatment strategy deploys specific human monoclonal antibodies to inactivate certain matrix metalloproteinases MMP-9 and MMP-14 and potentially improve patient outcomes. Unlike traditional chronic pain medication strategies, Releviate Therapeutics directly targets pain with antibodies whose development is rooted in actual pain pathology and in directly inactivating pain pathways. Initial indications address small fiber neuropathy and diabetic neuropathy. The company has headquarters in San Diego, California, and can be visited online at www.releviatellc.com.

T-Mobile Nearly Doubles Its Supercharged Mid-Band 5G in Just One Month

gbafNews28

Largest 5G network? Check. Blazing fast speeds customers can actually find? Check. T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) today announced it has nearly doubled the number of cities and towns that get supercharged mid-band 5G, adding even more capacity and superfast speeds to Americas largest nationwide 5G network. Mid-band 2.5 GHz 5G delivers both broad coverage and fast speeds at the same time – and it can even go through walls (looking at you, mmWave!). In places its deployed, average download speeds are already around 300 Mbps thats 7.5x faster than todays average LTE speeds with peak download speeds up to 1 Gbps. With todays announcement, T-Mobile mid-band 5G reaches nearly 410 cities and towns across the country. The Un-carrier is rolling out mid-band 5G at a furious pace, with plans to cover 100 million people by the end of the year.

Mid-band is the only way to deliver super-fast 5G speeds that can reach for miles. And heres the secret AT&T and Verizon dont want you to know: T-Mobile is the only one with big swaths of mid-band dedicated to 5G. T-Mobile has more mid-band spectrum than anyone else, said Neville Ray, President of Technology at T-Mobile. Were the only ones building a transformational 5G network built on dedicated not shared airwaves. And that means only T-Mobile is capable of making the worlds best 5G network a reality.

Why Mid-band for 5G?

Mid-band spectrum is the 5G spectrum. It combines massive capacity with far-reaching coverage to bring game-changing performance to more people across the country. Mid-band 2.5 GHz 5G delivers blazing fast speeds that can rival millimeter wave, but unlike mmWave, mid-band can blanket large areas with needed coverage and go through walls, windows and trees. Which means its a more practical 5G technology.

When it comes to real-world 5G, the only way to get the kind of performance benefits weve been promised is through the critical mid-band spectrum, noted Bob ODonnell, President of TECHnalysis Research. Sure, mmWave can be fast, but its nearly impossible to find, while low-band 5G is easy to find, but offers smaller improvement over existing LTE. With the 2.5 GHz spectrum being lit up by T-Mobile, however, you get the sweet spot of noticeably improved performance in a respectable coverage area. Thats the kind of 5G benefit that consumers are going to notice and appreciate.

T-Mobile has Americas largest 5G network and its only getting better as the Un-carrier deploys more mid-band spectrum from Sprint. T-Mobiles 5G network covers more than 7,500 cities and towns across nearly 1.4 million square miles of the U.S. Thats more square miles of 5G coverage than Verizon and AT&T combined 3.5x more than Verizon 5G and 2x more than AT&T. T-Mobile has pioneered a distinctive ˜layer cake strategy to deliver a transformative, nationwide 5G network for all: dedicated spectrum across all three layers of 5G low for far and wide coverage indoors and outside, mid for broad coverage and blazing fast speeds and high for super-fast speeds over shorter distances for the best 5G experience.

T-Mobile is the only one building 5G with dedicated spectrum across all three bands, which is important since 5G phones will use a lot of capacity. T-Mobile has wide open freeways ready to take on massive amounts of 5G traffic, while Verizon and AT&T have to steal LTE spectrum from their existing customers to broaden their 5G coverage. Using Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS), Verizon forces 5G and LTE customers to share bandwidth, splitting up the capacity so each technology only gets part of it, taking capacity away from their current smartphone customers and increasing congestion.

Now with mid-band spectrum, T-Mobile is building on its nationwide 5G foundation, increasing capacity and boosting speeds for customers. And its rolling out at lighting speed across the country. Engineers are lighting up 1,000 sites per month with 2.5 GHz 5G and T-Mobile has plans to cover 100 million people with mid-band 5G by the end of the year.

NS1 Releases Open Source Tool for Network Visibility, Announces Support for DNS over HTTPS to Flamethrower

gbafNews28

NS1, the leader in modern application and access networking, today announced that pktvisor, a lightweight, open source tool for real-time network visibility, is available on GitHub. Updates have also been made to NS1s open source DNS testing tool, Flamethrower, which now supports DNS over HTTPS.

The importance of applications and digital services has skyrocketed in 2020. Connectivity and resilience are imperative to keeping people connected and business moving forward. Visibility into network traffic, especially in distributed edge environments and with malicious attacks on the rise, is a critical part of ensuring uptime and performance.

NS1 created pktvisor to address our need for more visibility across our global anycast network, said Shannon Weyrick, vice president of architecture at NS1. By efficiently summarizing and collecting key metrics at all of our edge locations we gain a deep understanding of traffic patterns in real time, enabling rich visualization and fast automation which further increase our resiliency and performance. We are big users of and believers in open source software. As this tool will benefit other organizations leveraging distributed edge architectures, weve made it open and we invite the developer community to help drive future updates and innovation.

More About pktvisor

Pktvisor summarizes network traffic in real time directly on edge nodes with Apache data sketches. The summary information may be visualized locally via the included CLI UI, and simultaneously centrally collected via HTTP to your time series database of choice, to drive global visualizations and automation.

Metrics include:

  • Packet counts and rates (w/percentiles), breakdown by ingress/egress, protocol
  • DNS counts and rates, breakdown by protocol, response code
  • Cardinality: Source and destination IP, DNS Qname
  • DNS transaction timings (w/percentiles)
  • Top 10 heavy hitters for IPs and ports; DNS Qnames, Qtypes, Result Codes; slow DNS transactions, NX, SRVFAIL, REFUSED Qnames; and GeoIP and ASN

The metrics pktvisor provides can help network and security teams by supplementing existing metrics to help understand traffic patterns, identify attacks, and gather information on how to mitigate them.

Available as a Docker container, it is easy to install and has low network and storage requirements. Due to its summarizing design, the amount of data collected is a function of the number of hosts being collected, not a function of traffic rates, so spikes or even DDoS attacks will not affect downstream collection systems.

Pktvisor is available on GitHub at http://github.com/ns1/pktvisor, with API documentation on SwaggerHub at http://app.swaggerhub.com/apis/ns1labs/pktvisor.

Flamethrower Update:

In 2019, NS1 released Flamethrower, a lightweight, configurable open source tool for functional testing, benchmarking, and stress testing DNS servers and networks. Thanks to a community contribution, it now supports DNS over HTTPS, in addition to IPv4, IPv6, UDP, TCP, DNS over TLS, and experimental support for DNS over QUIC.

Increasing concerns over privacy and security are driving adoption of recursive DNS over HTTPS. Flamethrowers new functionality allows organizations to simulate realistic traffic patterns over DoH to provide a better understanding of the impact of potential changes to applications and infrastructure in actual production situations, said Weyrick.

Flamethrower has a modular system for generating the queries used in tests, allowing for rich and realistic test scenarios that can plug into automation pipelines. It simulates multiple concurrent clients and generates actionable metrics, including send and receive counts, timeouts, and errors and data on minimum, maximum, and average latency. The metric output format is suitable for ingestion into databases, such as Elastic, for further processing or visualization. Flamethrower remains an open source project, and community contributions are welcome and encouraged.

The source code is hosted on GitHub alongside other DNS-related tools at the DNS-OARC (Operations, Analysis, and Research Center) community.

About NS1

NS1 automates the deployment and delivery of the worlds most trafficked internet and enterprise applications. Its software-defined, next-generation application networking stack modernizes DNS, DHCP, and IPAM the familiar and universal foundations of all network and internet services to unlock unprecedented automation, visibility, and control in todays complex, heterogeneous environments. NS1 has more than 650 enterprise customers worldwide, including LinkedIn, Dropbox, Pitney Bowes, Bleacher Report, and The Guardian, and is backed by investments from Energy Impact Partners, Dell Technologies Capital, Cisco Investments, and GGV Capital.
