‘Selling Out California: Sen. Scott Wiener’s Money Ties to Big Real Estate,’ a Special Report by Housing Is A Human Right

Housing Is A Human Right, the housing advocacy division of AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), this week released a must-read investigative report about California State Sen. Scott Wieners troubling financial connections to the real estate industry.

Titled “Selling Out California: Scott Wiener’s Money Ties to Big Real Estate,” the report reveals that Wiener, a one-time San Francisco supervisor, has long relied on vast amounts of campaign cash from luxury-housing developers and other real estate players to win elections and stay in power.

In 2016, as he ran for the state senate, Wiener hauled in nearly 700 donations from developers, real estate attorneys, brokers, lobbyists, architects, and other real estate insiders, totaling $574,276, according to state records reviewed by Housing Is A Human Right. For his 2020 reelection bid, Wiener has so far raked in $153,816 from the real estate industry.

As a result, Wiener is indebted to developers and other real estate players. And unsurprisingly, he is perhaps the most aggressive state legislator to push a controversial build, baby, build housing agenda long advanced by Big Real Estate. His sweeping bill SB 50 can generate billions for his political patrons.

But activists say the legislation will ultimately devastate middle- and working-class communities.

“SB 50 is a trickle-down, luxury-housing bill that does virtually nothing to urgently address California’s housing affordability crisis right now,” says Rene Christian Moya, director of Housing Is A Human Right. “Even worse, the bill will fuel gentrification and displacement crises throughout the state — while Big Real Estate makes even more billions as hard-working people suffer. It’s outrageous — and unacceptable.”

Moya adds, “Through SB 50, Senator Wiener will harm millions of middle- and working-class Californians, especially people of color, who too often bear the brunt of gentrification.”

The report also discloses that Wiener routinely rolls out legislation that can enrich other major campaign contributors, such as Gilead Sciences and Anheuser-Busch.
